What material is TPU?
2021-11-09 10:29
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer) is a polymer material that belongs to the polyurethane (PU) family. TPU is a block-linear polymer of the (AB)n type, where A represents a high-molecular-weight polyester or polyether, and B is a diol containing 2 to 12 straight-chain carbon atoms. The AB blocks are linked together via diisocyanates. TPU exhibits reversibility due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding or mild crosslinking between macromolecular chains. In the molten or solution state, the intermolecular forces weaken; however, upon cooling or solvent evaporation, these forces re-establish themselves strongly, allowing TPU to regain its original solid-state properties.
TPU boasts a variety of properties, including high elasticity, wear resistance, oil resistance, low-temperature resistance, and aging resistance. Its hardness ranges from 65A to 85D, and it can come in colors such as transparent or translucent. TPU has extremely wide-ranging applications, primarily in fields like footwear materials, pharmaceuticals, coatings, and adhesives.
There are several synthesis methods for TPU, including the one-step method and the prepolymer method. The one-step method is simple but suffers from difficulties in removing reaction heat; while the prepolymer method is more complex, it yields superior product performance. Production equipment includes automated casting systems, curing ovens, extruders, and other machinery. The continuous production method boasts high efficiency and is well-suited for large-scale manufacturing.
